How to choose the right custom optical diffuser format

Light Shaping Diffusers® come in a variety of physical formats and there are four basic types: low-cost injection-molded light diffusers, thin-film diffusers on rolls, rigid sheets LED diffusers and high-temperature glass diffusers.

  • Injection molded diffusers

  • Low-cost Injection Molded Parts for High Volume LED Lighting Applications

Low-cost injection-molded Light Shaping Diffuser® lenses are available for high volume LED lighting applications. Lenses (or windows) can be custom designed in a variety of circular and elliptical beam angles making them suitable for downlights as well as PAR or MR lamp formats. They can be designed to fit a lamp or fixture with the appropriate mechanical tabs or clips molded in. The monolithic integration of Luminit’s microstructures into the exit window of a lamp or fixture results in a rigid lens with very high light transmission, a smooth “frosty” finish and a controlled beam pattern. These parts can be made to fit most lamp formats, including downlights, spotlights, flashlights, and other lighting fixtures and can be produced at low cost in quantities of 10,000 or more.

  • large volume diffuser rolls

  • Large Volume Applications Using Thin Film on Light Shaping Diffuser® Rolls

Holographic diffuser film, or Light Shaping Diffusers®,  are available in seamed or seamless rolls on polycarbonate or polyester substrates. Luminit has the unique capability of making thin-film light diffuser rolls that are totally seamless, and these cost-effective rolls can be of almost infinite length and are producible in a variety of widths. UV-stable or UL-approved substrates are also available. Only Luminit offers a seamless format in both circular and elliptical angles to redirect and homogenize light sources without film-to-film contact or overlapping. Thicknesses from 0.005" to 0.030" are available.

  • Rigid Sheet Light Shaping Diffusers®

Luminit Light Shaping Diffusers® are available in various circular and elliptical angles in pre-cut and rigid sheet format. Ideal for outdoor and indoor architectural fixtures, our rigid sheet LED diffusers allow you to modify the beam angle without changing the fixture. Non-yellowing and UV stable, thicknesses range from 0.030" to 0.250". Luminit is the only manufacturer that replicates LED lighting diffusers directly onto rigid panels and not through a lamination process. While lamination can be cheaper in the short term, “de-lamination” can occur, particularly on outdoor fixtures which are exposed to the sun and inclement weather. Luminit level quality means our rigid LED light diffusers are more reliable, longer-lasting, and won't peel or yellow over time.

  • diffuser mini rolls

  • Mini Strip Rolls for Linear Lighting Diffusion

Luminit Light Shaping Diffusers® are also available in mini roll strips to enhance linear fixtures, decorative trim, and diffusion of LED strip lights. You specify the width and angle (circular or elliptical), and we’ll custom cut 250-foot rolls that can be cut to length as needed to hide hotspots, eliminate striations, and diminish shadows and glare.

  • high temperature glass diffusers

  • Glass-on-Glass for High-Temperature Applications

Popular with our high technology clients, our Glass-on-Glass Light Shaping Diffusers® are primarily used in laser, biomedical instrumentation and other high temperature/high power applications as well as UV applications requiring high transmission at UV wavelengths. Custom sizes are available to fit most applications. We make Glass-on-Glass Light Shaping Diffusers by replicating our surface relief structures in Sol-Gel directly on a float glass or UV silica substrate.
