LED Based Signage and Displays

The evolution of lighting technology has made a major impact on sign and display applications. Very large LED “TV” screens are used for major sporting events and for interactive indoor and outdoor signage. These “TV screens” can be made in virtually any size and shape. The new Dubai Mall will have over 6,000 square feet of interactive LED displays with one of the screens being over 2,000 square feet in area.

The availability of LEDs has also changed the economics of lighted signage because of the reduced energy requirements and particularly the reduced maintenance cost. Solar powered remote lighted road signs are now practical for many applications.

Lower cost projectors have also had a significant impact. Retail stores in malls and shopping centers are utilizing projection screens in their windows when they are closed to advertise their goods and services. This application started in Europe, but is spreading. Miniature “pico” projectors are being shown in concept cell phones and concept cars.
